AM Alert: Police chiefs oppose Proposition 63

One might expect police chiefs to support a measure aimed at strengthening gun control laws. Not this year.
The California Police Chiefs Association will announce its opposition today to Proposition 63, a ballot measure championed by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom.
The measure undoes laws the association helped enact, doesn’t allow necessary input from stakeholders, limits attempts to enact future reform, and “fails to meet the appropriate balance between public safety and individual gun rights,” wrote Ken Corney, president of the association, in a letter explaining its opposition.
“Specifically, Proposition 63 reverses many of the exemptions that allow officers and police departments to continue purchasing ammunition freely for on-duty purposes, and creates a duplicative database that will be a costly and less effective way to monitor ammunition purchases,” Corney wrote.
This isn’t the only Newsom-backed measure the chiefs are bucking at the ballot box. The association is a leading opponent of Proposition 64, which would legalize recreational marijuana.
